In July UCU ran two practitioners group events, one for additional support practitioners and the other for functional skills, maths and English practitioners.
At the additional support practitioner event we heard from parent carers/disability champions – Sue Titterington and Jo and Kath Wood who are from Wirral Trade Union Education unit. At the Functional skills, maths and English event we heard from Sharon Simmons, an experienced maths practitioner.
The events were an opportunity for practitioners to discuss the issues and challenges facing education staff, an opportunity to share good practice with other colleges, universities, prison and adult learning practitioners and also an opportunity to consider what improvements could be made and campaigns raised.
Both events were well attended and provided a ‘safe’ space for practitioners to meet with colleagues from other institutions and discuss the ‘real’ obstacles and hurdles they face were they work. We will be setting up a network of those practitioners who attended and repeating the events in the future.
