Challenging Workload Culture: How to Say No With Confidence
11 July 2024, 10:30 - 12:00Online (Zoom)
Challenging Excessive Workloads in Education Thursday 11 July 10:30am-12 noon
What to expect
Overwhelming workloads and excessive non-promotional tasks can affect your morale and even lead to stress-related health issues. It’s crucial to recognise that feeling overwhelmed is a stress response, occurring when demands exceed our resources.
This workshop will empower you to push back against excessive workloads using various strategies, including Health and Safety measures and challenging a workplace culture that leads to excessive workload collectively.
The full aims of the interactive workshop are to:
- Identify assertiveness techniques and strategies for saying “no” at work
- Learn to use Health and Safety legislation to push back in order to protect us against workplace stress and health risks due to excessive workloads
- Understand the role of collective action in changing workplace culture through union campaigning.
How the workshop will work
The taught sessions will last for about 70 minutes, after which time it may be possible to take 15-20 minutes to discuss the issues raised with a UCU official. The total time commitment will be less than an hour and a half.
You will need to find a quiet space, away from distractions (like telephone and email), and you may prefer to use headphones for the session. I would also recommend that you check that you can use zoom before the session if you are unfamiliar with it.
Please note that you will need to join the meeting within 15 minutes of the start time and that we will not be able to admit latecomers who are more than 15 minutes late. This is due to the fact that in order to ensure that breakout groups work effectively we need to give detailed instructions at the outset which it will be impractical to repeat.
We plan to use the zoom “chat” function during the session. If that will in any way inhibit your full participation please contact us beforehand so that alternative arrangements can be made. You will need to find a quiet space, away from distractions (like telephone and email!), and you may prefer to use headphones for the session. I would also recommend that you check that you can use zoom before the session if you are unfamiliar with it.
Live transcription will be available. We are passionately committed to ensuring that everyone can fully participate in UCU CPD sessions so if you need us to make any additional facilities available to you please get in touch as soon as you can. We will do everything possible to help.
