Connecting with Industry & the Local Community for Climate Justice
11 February 2025, 14:00 - 15:30Online (Zoom)
Organising with the local community for climate justice: Tuesday 11 February 2:00pm-3:30pm
This pilot session will explore how UCU members can organise for climate justice with the local community, including local industry, particularly through academic partnerships and a trade union approach.
The full aims of the interactive workshop are to:
- Understand the role of the community, and local industry in creating spaces and opportunities for climate justice work
- Explore examples and case studies of trade union organising with local community
- Explore how to use UCU’s Green New Deal bargaining, and other frameworks, for a collective approach between UCU members and the local community.
-
How it will work
The session will be led by Students Organising For Sustainability –UK, who have worked closely with UCU on these issues. The taught session will last for about 50-60 minutes, after which UCU’s policy office who leads on sustainability will lead a discussion on what this all means for you, which should take another 15 to 20 minutes. The total time commitment will be less than an hour and a half.
Please note that you will need to join the meeting within 15 minutes of the start time and that we will not be able to admit latecomers who are more than 15 minutes late. This is due to the fact that in order to ensure that breakout groups work effectively we need to give detailed instructions at the outset which it will be impractical to repeat.
We plan to use the zoom “chat” function during the session. If that will in any way inhibit your full participation please contact us beforehand so that alternative arrangements can be made. You will need to find a quiet space, away from distractions (like telephone and email!), and you may prefer to use headphones for the session. I would also recommend that you check that you can use zoom before the session if you are unfamiliar with it.
Live transcription will be available. We are passionately committed to ensuring that everyone can fully participate in UCU CPD sessions so if you need us to make any additional facilities available to you please get in touch as soon as you can. We will do everything possible to help.
