Recognising LGBT+ Exclusion Workshop: Wednesday 13 March 10:30am – 12 noon

‘LGBT+ inclusion is much better than it used to be Isn’t it?

Come along to this workshop to find out what normativities are and how they are impeding LGBT+ liberation. This new workshop is a companion to UCU’s LGBT+ Language in Use CPD session. We will discuss what we can do to challenge (the) normative assumptions and prevent (thenegative impacts that they have.

We believe we are the first union to be running a workshop on normativities so come and join us for this progressive exploration of normativities, inclusion and LGBT+ liberation.  All members are welcome, whatever your level of knowledge or experience in this area as we address this topic together.

Learning Aims

  • To get an understanding of what normativities are

To recognise occasions where normativities are used, and their impact.

Consider how members and branches can collectively challenge normativities

To engage in some discussion about what LGBT+ inclusion really looks like, including support for aspects of lifestyles that vary from normativities e.g. caring networks

How UCU CPD workshops work

The taught session will last for about 75 minutes, after which time we take 15-20 minutes to discuss the issues raised. This workshop will be led by Seth Atkin, UCU’s Equality Support Official leading on issues around LGBT+ rights. The total time commitment will be around an hour and a half.

You will need to find a quiet space, away from distractions (like telephone and email!), and you may prefer to use headphones for the session. I would also recommend that you check that you can use zoom before the session if you are unfamiliar with it.

Once registered you will be sent a meeting number and password for the webinar using zoom. You will be able to join the session from about 10 minutes before the stated start time. I would also recommend that you do join 5 to 10 minutes early as you will need to be admitted to the session, and of course there can be technical problems.

Live transcription will be available. If you have any other additional requirements please let us know.

If you have any questions please email Glen at  gpickard@ucu.org.uk
